2017 Sailing School Was a Hit
The Lake City Yacht Club put on their annual Sailing School this past weekend, June 17 & 18. Twenty new sailors took part in the two day event this year, ages ranging from 11 – 70.
The students enjoyed almost perfect weather to begin their journey to becoming sailors. Saturday was warm, with light winds, perfect for setting out on a sunfish sailboat for the first time. Sunday was cooler, but with exciting winds to test their new-found skills.
As always, the sailing school starts out with about two hours of classroom training, going over such things as water safety, sailing knots, points of sail and other topics necessary to begin sailing. After that the students and instructors move to the beach where they learn how to rig their sunfish. With their boats rigged, its time to shove off and sail away from the shore with their personal instructor onboard.
Many of the new sailors said they had a great time and couldn’t wait to try their hand at sailing on their own.
